Welcome to our german folkart section of farm animals and wild animals. These imported german animals make wonderful german gifts or german collectibles. Many of our animals come from the studios of Christian Werner. Christian has committed himself to the almost extinct art of "Reifendrehen" - turning on a ring of wood. In search of a way to produce limited numbers of animal figures out of wood in an economically advantageous manner, this procedure arose out of the Erzgebirge region. In early times the wooden lathes of the toymakers were driven by waterpower made possible by the descent of the village's stream. The workshop of Christian Werner is one of the few today which continues to master "Reifendrehen" in its original form. Here the rings are turned out of fir wood as they were two hundred years ago. The individual figures are then split off the ring and then carved with a knife. Through this course of pure hand labor, little wooden creatures arise, once they are handpainted, with an incomparable individual character.
